Participants brought to the table locally relevant practices and their showcase potential. Based on this exploration, participants reflected on the WP3 criteria that are important for showcase potential. As education towards behavioural change emerged as a key concern in the lab, the potential breakthrough area of ‘Education and New Methods’ was proposed the subject around which breakthroughs would be explored. The discussion focused on how participants saw this being realised, and what barriers and enablers would it have to face. Regarding future pathways to impact for the Lab, collaboration was stressed, and a combination of policy-driven and locally-sourced approaches was considered necessary in achieving change.

Brief description: The first series consisted of 4 lab workshops, involved 55 participants and resulted in the preparation of a ‘Preliminary R&I Agenda for the promotion of healthy and sustainable diets at the regional level’. Learning and system understanding were encouraged all throughout. The 4 multi-stakeholder workshops contained three key elements: (1) Visioning the desired transformation in the R&I System towards FOOD 2030, (2) system analysis: identification of challenges, opportunities, needs from the different actors to move towards the vision (3) identifying disruptive R&I solutions: taking into account systemic elements (trends developed by FIT4FOOD2030’s WP2, breakthroughs and showcases identified by participants and results from points 1&2). At each stage, results were analysed and clustered in a group setting. Participants were asked to build a mural using: the problems detected, trends that facilitate the resolution of the problems, trends that are an obstacle for their resolution, and showcases and R&I lines (disruptive and incremental ones). Data gathered from this workshop contributed to generating a ‘Preliminary R&I Agenda for the promotion of healthy and sustainable diets at the regional level’ upon which further workshops will build.

Brief description: Co-organised with key stakeholders of the City Lab (the Municipality of Milan and the Cariplo Foundation), the workshop represented a chance to further build system understanding via a reflection on showcases (as understood in the FIT4FOOD2030 project). The workshop focused on cases of tools to foster innovation in the food system, prompted by the City Lab’s vision crucial to foster the dialogue of different stakeholders in the innovation processes and the launch of the Milan Food Policy Incubator by Cariplo Factory. In light of the topic, almost 50% of all external participants came from the innovation field, representing businesses, startups and incubators allowing the diversification of the lab’s network. After gathering and discussing in groups specific cases from their own expertise and the criteria that made those cases stand out as showcases, participants delved into an in-depth analysis (along four lines: possibilities, limits, attractiveness and critical issues) of a local case of relevance: the Milan Food Policy Incubator. The approach taken by this workshop linked the broader project concepts and discussion frame to the local context.
